Defining Happiness
For most of my life I struggled to understand what happiness is because I never thought about defining it. I learned culturally relativistic ideas of what will make me happy -- e.g. money, power, prestige -- but it never seemed to satisfy me, or last. Then I saw this Ted Talk by Robert Waldinger, director of a 75-year-old study on adult development by Harvard. This helped me re-frame what happiness means to me and how I get it. Today my definition of happiness is being both fulfilled and productive.
The So What: Happiness comes from developing strong relationships those we spend time with. Choose people who share your values.
